Why variety matters

Fresh ads every week. Each one a new idea.

Meta recommends running at least 20 diversified ads in its Advantage+ shopping campaigns, and says its strongest advertisers launch new ads every week. It also treats ads that look alike as one ad. When you’re spending $10K or more a month, your team is already busy running the ads, and coming up with that many truly new ideas every week is the hard part. It’s the part Azulan takes off your plate.

The squint test: 15 look-alikes are 1 ad to Meta.

Put your live ads side by side and squint. If they blur into one, Meta’s system is likely to treat them as one. Fifteen truly different ideas give it fifteen chances. Meta’s advice is to skip “small, subtle tweaks to the same ad” and make ads that are “truly different in look, feel, storyline, and message.”

How many new ads a month?

Two published numbers show the pace. Both only work if each new ad is a different idea.

Official Meta data

20+

diversified ads, as a starting point

Meta’s recommended minimum for Advantage+ shopping campaigns, with 20–30% of the budget set aside for testing new ads. Meta says its strongest advertisers “routinely launch new ads on a weekly basis.”

Independent data

8.0 vs 4.1

new ads a week, at $10K–$50K a month in Meta spend

The top 25% of accounts launched 8.0 new ads a week; the average account launched 4.1. At $50K–$200K a month it was 15.9 vs 6.6, and under $10K it was 4.8 vs 2.8.

Top accounts are the top 25% by number of winning ads; a winner spent at least 10× the account’s typical ad. Motion measured where Meta put the budget, not sales.

Our plan

Every ad is a new idea. The monthly plan is 32 new ads a month, 8 every Friday, and each one is a different concept: a new reason to buy, a new person or a new look. Spending $50K+ a month? Ask about a larger plan.

Each new ad has to be a new concept

When time is short, the quick fix is a new headline on the photo you already have. Meta doesn’t treat that as a new ad. A new concept changes at least one of these three things.

Plain-English definition
01

A new reason to buy

Gifting instead of treating yourself. Proof from reviews instead of the product on its own. A new problem it solves.

02

A new person

Someone different using it, or a different kind of customer it’s for: a new parent, a host, a first-time buyer.

03

A new look

A new setting, photo style or format: a close-up, a dinner table, a flat lay of what’s inside.

×

Doesn’t count

A new headline, badge or color band on the same photo. That’s a tweak of the same ad, not a new one.

Official Meta dataMeta draws the same line: “Creative iteration might produce two ads with identical visuals, but different text CTAs, while creative diversification would generate two distinctly different pieces of creative.”

What happens each time someone opens Instagram or Facebook

Meta’s system narrows every eligible ad down to a short list for each person, and Meta says only “the most relevant and distinct creatives move forward.”

Meta’s words: “With a wider range of creatives, businesses can give our ads system more options to work with when testing different variations of ads with different audiences at scale.”

What that means for you: every new, different ad is one more option for the system to match with someone. Ads that look alike count as one option.

2×

the cost that sets off a fatigue warning

Ads Manager marks an ad “Creative fatigue” when its cost per result reaches twice that of your past ads. Meta’s first fix is a new ad with an image or video that is “materially different.”

More ads helped. More varied ads helped twice as much.

The study found that cost per acquisition dropped when clients ran 20 ads instead of only their top 5, and dropped about twice as much for clients whose ads were more varied.

The agency also found that when spend piled onto a few ads (in one case, three ads took 91% of the budget), there was little variety left for the system to use.
